91热爆

91热爆 Radio 1 presenter Dev investigates the Internet of Things and large scale data collection and analysis. He visits the Smart City of Bristol and applies computational thinking to basic ethical questions about the ownership of data.

The film asks, how do we stay connected and take advantage of the Internet of Things and Big Data 鈥 but also stay safe, secure and in control of our personal data?

As a case-study of solving societal problems with computing and technology Dev looks at the practical application of Big Data collection in a civic context by visiting Bristol鈥檚 Combined Operations Centre.

How might it help a city run more efficiently and enhance citizens鈥 and visitors鈥 lives?

The film shows how data is gathered from hundreds 鈥 if not thousands - of objects that are now capable of using the internet to talk to each other 鈥 gathering and sharing huge amounts of information, acting on some of it directly as well as passing on data for storage, retrieval and analysis elsewhere.

Teacher Notes

This could be used to prompt an exploration of different ways of collecting data. How can it help a city run more efficiently and enhance citizens鈥 and visitors鈥 lives? The class could be split into two groups and asked to present arguments for and against Big Data collection. What are the ethical issues and what are the benefits?
