As well as a sold-out event at the New Wolsey Theatre, there was lion dancing in the streets.

2008 is the year of the rat. The Suffolk Chinese Association organises the street celebrations each year with invitations going out to civic dignitaries. This year it all happened on Queen Street, outside the Canton Ocean restaurant. The dancers and musicians are all from the Golden Dragon Kung Fu club at Newton near Sudbury. Lion dancers have to be kung fu students. You can also look at a gallery of pictures from the event by clicking on the link on the right. If you've got any good snaps of your own, then please send them to us. This year they performed an ancient Chinese tale of two villages. The ruling local dynasty wouldn't let the two villages talk to each other. ![]() The villagers solution was to use the lion dancers to pass a message between them concealing it in a lettuce. The Suffolk Chinese Community Art Group were in charge of the New Year event at the New Wolsey theatre.
