Great Britain's four-man bobsleigh team won their first medal of the season by taking bronze at the World Cup in Lillehammer, Norway.

Brad Hall, Leon Greenwood, Taylor Lawrence and Greg Cackett secured a podium finish behind a German one-two.

It was only GB pilot Hall's third World Cup appearance of the season after recovering from a back injury that required surgery in October last year.

"To come out here and win a medal is fantastic," said Hall, 33.

"We weren't prepared for this race in four-man, we had problems with the sled and our brakeman Greg struggled with Achilles problems.

"But it's a great position to be in a month away from World Championships."

Team-mate Cackett added: "We're over the moon to be back in the top three - that's where we feel we belong."

Olympic champion Francesco Friedrich captained Germany to victory alongside Thorsten Margis, Alexander Schuller and Felix Straub.

Compatriots Johannes Lochner, Florian Bauer, Erec Bruckert and Georg Fleischhauer took silver.

The second British four-man team of Ally Kay, Jens Hullah, Luka Williams and pilot Adam Baird finished 17th on their World Cup debut.

Earlier in the day, Adele Nicoll and Kya Placide finished 11th in the women's bobsleigh, with Nikki McSweeney and Willa Gibb 14th.

The next World Cup meeting is in Sigulda, Latvia, on 2 and 3 February.

The World Championships take place in Winterberg, Germany, between 24 February and 3 March.
