Former fly-half Jonathan Davies says Wales do not have the strength in depth to cope with further injuries ahead of the Rugby World Cup.

Liam Williams has undergone foot surgery but the Scarlets full-back will continue to prepare for the tournament.

Clermont Auvergne centre Jonathan Davies has already been ruled out of the World Cup with a knee injury.

"We've got to try and keep as many players as fit as we possibly can," ex-Wales captain Davies said.

"But this is an occupational hazard. When you train there's always a chance of getting an injury."

Wales have not revealed the specific nature of Williams' problem, describing it as "a foot complaint" and not detailed when he is expected to return to full fitness.

Warren Gatland's side, who face Uruguay in their opening game on 20 September, will prepare for the tournament with training camps in Qatar and Switzerland.

They will also return to Poland, where they have twice held camps under Gatland and train in north Wales.

The 47-strong training squad will be trimmed to a final 31 at the end of August, following two warm-up games against Ireland.

Wales complete their tournament build-up by hosting Italy at Millennium Stadium on Saturday, 5 September.

Scrum V pundit Davies is hopeful Scarlets' Williams will have recovered in time for the warm-up games but says further injuries would hinder preparations.

"There's enough time hopefully and he [Williams] can stay with them, get fully fit and he'll be there for the World Cup," Davies added.

"It's disappointing because strength in depth I think is our problem.

"Once the rugby starts in August there's the likelihood of more injuries happening and we'll be very lucky if we don't pick up a couple of injuries.

"Fingers crossed everybody will be fit."
