Wales coach Warren Gatland must find a place for Liam Williams in the back three to face England, says former Wales wing Shane Williams.

Scarlets full-back Williams, 23, has been in fine form this season, and played wing in Wales' last match, a 12-6 win over South Africa in November.

His namesake thinks he could oust Alex Cuthbert to face England on 6 February.

"I think you have got to find a place for Liam Williams in the back three," said Wales' record try-scorer.

"What you have got to do is go with form players and, if you are playing well for your club, that means you are playing with confidence and the next stage is to take it to the international level.

"Liam Williams epitomises that at the moment. He has been excellent for the Scarlets this season and for a number of seasons now.

"When he plays for Wales he has certainly done a job and hasn't let anyone down."

An injury to George North meant Williams started on the left wing against the Springboks, but the Northampton giant has since returned to full fitness.

Former British and Irish Lions wing Shane Williams believes the Scarlets man could struggle to claim the full-back berth, which is usually occupied by place-kicker Leigh Halfpenny.

But he does think the 23-year-old might have a chance of starting on the wing ahead of another Lion, Cuthbert.

"I think there's going to be a real tussle between Cuthbert and Williams on the wing," said Williams.

"Cuthbert possibly hasn't been playing that well for the Cardiff Blues this year.

"The problem is Cuthbert has shown in big games he is a match-winner. That's another headache for Warren.

"But if you look at club level, Cuthbert has not been playing as well as Williams.

"Does he go with performance and how well you have been playing for your club, or what the player has done in the past? It's a difficult one."
