Wakefield Trinity Wildcats have agreed to sign Australian half-back Tim Smith, subject to the former Wigan Warriors player obtaining a visa.

The 26-year-old ex-Parramatta player has agreed a one-year deal.

"I've been in England before but I think now is a better time for me to come across and I'm happy to be coming to Wakefield," he said.

"I've spoken to Richard [Agar] about his plans for next year and I'm looking forward to being part of the team."

He returned to the NRL with Cronulla Sharks, making 19 appearances and scoring five tries.

He found his chances limited in 2011 and is looking to reignite is career in Super League.

"I think having played in Super League before will work in my favour because I've got an idea of what to expect," Smith said.

"I just want to play consistently well and do my job for the team. If I can play well then I'll be happy and, from a team point of view, hopefully we can have a good year and try and make the play-offs."

Smith's arrival will give head coach Richard Agar added options at half-back following the recent signing of Isaac John and Kyle Wood.

Agar said: "He's obviously played in Super League before so he knows what it's all about and he's coming here wanting to get back playing regularly and playing to his undoubted ability, and I know he is determined to make the most of this move.

"We've got new options with Tim, Isaac John and Kyle Wood in the halves and that competition for places can bring the best out of all three which can only be beneficial for us next season.

"It's a great opportunity for him and we are happy and excited to have his talent and experience in the group."
