European Games 2015: Maddock wins gold for Team GB

Charlie Maddock secured Great Britain's third medal in a day with taekwondo gold at the European Games in Baku, Azerbaijan.

The 19-year-old, in only her second major tournament, beat Serbia's Tijana Bogdanovic in the -49kg category.

Earlier, British canoeists Lani Belcher and Ed McKeever won silver and bronze respectively at the Games.

McKeever, 31, took bronze in the men's K1 200m canoe sprint before Belcher, 26, claimed K1 5,000m silver.

"I can't believe it, it's just amazing" said Maddock, who is a seven-time world junior kick-boxing champion and only switched to taekwondo two years ago.

"It's awesome what's happened but it's hopefully only the start and I want to push on and win the next competition and the next and just keep going - hopefully toward Rio 2016."

Maddock's success took Team GB's medal tally at the Games to four, with Gordon Benson having claimed the first with gold in the men's triathlon on Sunday.

There are 160 British athletes taking part in 13 of the 20 sports at the inaugural Games.

Brit watch - 'age doesn't matter'

Of the other Britons who reached the finals, Canoeists Liam Heath and Jon Schofield missed out on bronze by six thousandths of a second in the K2 200m, coming joint fourth, while Rachel Cawthorn came eighth and ninth in the K1 500m and 200m respectively.

Meanwhile, 17-year-old Max Cater exited at the quarter-finals of the men's taekwondo -58kg event, losing 13-3 to Belgium's Si Mohamed Ketbi.

"In this sport you can fight at any age. Age doesn't matter," said Cater.

"It could be realistic for me to get to Rio, I could do it, but it is just about whether I can get the ranking points."
