Belfast Giants edged out by Sheffield Steelers

Craig Peacock scored for the Giants in Sheffield

Belfast Giants' six-game winning run ended as they were edged out 2-1 by Sheffield Steelers on Sunday evening.

After their 6-3 home win over Cardiff on Saturday evening, Craig Peacock put the Giants ahead in Sheffield with a fourth-minute goal.

However, Tom Sestito levelled with a powerplay strike seven minutes later and Steven Goertzen's goal early in the second period proved the winner.

Despite the win, Belfast remain at the top of the table in the Elite League.

Goertzen's goal looked to be a lapse in concentration by the Giants defence as he scored after only 19 seconds into the second period.

In Saturday's game in Belfast, Tyson Marsh put Cardiff ahead but goals by Adam Keefe, Scott Champagne, Daymen Rycroft and Andrew Fournier made it 4-1 to the Giants after the first period.

Devin Didiomete and Phil Hill found the net in the second period to reduce the visitors' deficit but Noah Clarke and Keefe added goals for the Giants in the third period.

Belfast will be back in action next weekend in Germany when they play three games in the Continental Cup.

They open their Continental Cup campaign in Landshut against Dutch side Ruijters Eaters Geleen on Friday before taking on the host German club a day later before Sunday's final group game against Romanian club HSC Csikszereda.
