Rory McIlroy's hopes of winning the Wells Fargo Championship ended after a poor back nine in the final round at Quail Hollow, North Carolina.

The world number two from Holywood was just one shot off the lead before a double-bogey at the 12th was followed by a dropped shot at the next hole.

McIlroy carded a one-over-par 73 to end tied 10th on four under.

England's David Lynn lost to American PGA Tour rookie Derek Ernst in a play-off after they finished on eight under.

Lynn found the bunker with his approach on the 18th - the first play-off hole - and 22-year-old Ernst took advantage.

Overnight leader Phil Mickelson had been leading on nine under after 15 holes but bogeyed the 16th and 17th to slip out of contention.

England's Lee Westwood and Sweden's Robert Karlsson both posted final round scores of 72 to share fourth on 282.

McIlroy bogeyed the opening hole but picked up three birdies before posting a six at the par-four 12th.

His challenge continue to fade at the 13th and a birdie at the 16th was followed by another bogey at the final hole.
