American Lucas Glover beat compatriot Jonathan Byrd at the first extra hole of a sudden death play-off to win the Wells Fargo Championship.

The 2009 US Open champion parred the par-four 18th after his rival had made five, with both having finished on 15-under par for the tournament.

South Africa's Rory Sabbatini finished third after carding a seven-under 65, to finish on 14 under.

Ireland's Padraig Harrington shot 68 to finish on 10 under and tied ninth.

Harrington, who was caused some controversy when he was informed that someone thought he had teed his ball ahead of the markers on the 13th.

Harrington and playing partner Phil Mickelson went out to the tee, watched replays and concluded that it was impossible to decide.

"There's just no way," Harrington told a rules official on the 13th. "If somebody asked me, I would have sworn I was six inches behind the marker," added the Irishman, who had re-teed once to move the ball back before hitting on the par-three.

Harrington said he was comfortable with his decision, but added he would be "falling off the back of the tee" in future to avoid any hint of confusion.

His score stood and he finished level with four-time major winner Mickelson, who was round in 69 on the final day.

England's Brian Davis, who was in contention on Sunday, produced a bogey-double bogey finish that resulted in him dropping down to nine under.
