Wolves defender Yerson Mosquera is expected to miss the rest of the season with a serious knee injury.

The 23-year-old was carried off in the 82nd minute of Saturday's 3-1 defeat at Aston Villa after being caught by Morgan Rogers and twisting his knee.

The Colombia international has undergone scans to determine the severity of the injury and will now require an operation.

Wolves' head of high performance Phil Hayward said: "Yerson has now had all of the various assessments and scans which unfortunately confirm injuries to the medial collateral ligament (MCL) and the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL).

"We will be visiting specialists in the coming days to finalise the plan for surgery; this will take place in the next two weeks.

"Timescales are difficult to state prior to surgery but it is highly unlikely he will feature again this season."

Mosquera has started all five of Wolves' Premier League games this term after spending last year on loan at Villarreal in La Liga.

Wolves were already short in defence having failed to bring in a replacement for captain Max Kilman after his 拢40m move to West Ham in the summer.

The injury adds to boss Gary O'Neil's problems with his side winless and bottom of the Premier League going into Saturday's match at home to Liverpool.
