Notts County midfielder Matt Palmer is to miss the rest of the season for the promotion-chasing League Two side.

Palmer, 28, suffered a serious knee injury in last weekend's 2-0 home defeat by promotion rivals Wrexham.

After seeing a specialist on Friday, Notts issued a statement to confirm he is out "for the foreseeable future".

"Matt is very much at the forefront of our thoughts as he begins a long rehabilitation from this very unfortunate injury," the club said.

"As with Geraldo Bajrami and Cedwyn Scott, who we were also devastated to pick up long-term injuries earlier this season, the club will provide Matt with all the support he needs to recover.

"We'd like to reassure supporters that work is well underway to strengthen the squad in key areas.

"To have not only lost Matt, but also Geraldo, in the defensive midfield position is extremely unfortunate - especially when you consider John Bostock has also been injured for a lengthy period.

"While the January transfer window is our primary focus, free agents are also being considered as we look to back our head coach, Luke Williams, in his efforts to build on the team's excellent start to the season."

Notts are second in League Two, five points behind leaders Stockport and level on points with third-placed Wrexham, who they edge on goal difference.

They are in FA Cup first-round action on Saturday with a home tie against fellow League Two side Crawley, followed by two away games next week, at Lincoln City in the EFL Trophy on Tuesday night, followed by next Saturday's trip to Crewe.
