Reading 5-2 Huddersfield Town

  • Published

Matej Vydra scored a hat-trick as Reading fought from two goals down to defeat 10-man Huddersfield Town and reach the FA Cup fourth round.

Jamie Paterson fired in to put the Terriers ahead before Tommy Smith made it 2-0 with an angled drive.

Jon Hogg then saw red when he brought down Vydra, and Lucas Piazon scored from the resulting 20-yard free-kick.

Vydra finished off a great counter and added two more from close range before Alex Fernandez's late long-range fifth.

Czech forward Vydra - on loan from Watford - was also denied by goalkeeper Joe Murphy, who made a superb one-handed save, and Danny Williams also went close for the Royals with a strike that whistled inches past the post.

Brian McDermott on Reading win over Huddersfield

Reading will now host League One high-flyers Walsall on Saturday, 30 January.

Reading manager Brian McDermott: "In this day and age people get so carried away. You don't get carried away with a 5-2 win or a 1-0 loss. We need to enjoy watching our team again.

"I was calm at half time. I said we need to use the spare man, pass the ball, keep the ball, and opportunities will arise. They got behind the ball and we did what we had to do."

Huddersfield manager David Wagner: "The red card totally changed the game. We were excellent at 11 against 11 and bad afterwards.

"Before the red card you could see how well the team played without the pressure of the table. But we have to accept it. Next time we drop to 10 men, we will be better."
