Ex-interim boss Lee Carsley has left Brentford after the recent appointment of Dean Smith as head coach.

Carsley, 41, was Under-21s coach at Griffin Park before taking over as head coach on an interim basis when Marinus Dijkhuizen was sacked in September.

He agreed to stay until the end of December as part of a handover process after Smith's arrival in November.

But Carsley left on Thursday after talks with co-directors of football Phil Giles and Rasmus Ankersen.

Ankersen told Brentford's website: "His work ensured we were able to take our time and find the right head coach to lead the club forward, and he has passed on his knowledge of the players and staff to Dean.

"When Lee suggested his work at the club was done, we were happy to let him go. He has done a great job."

Brentford won five and drew two of their 10 matches under Carsley before former Walsall boss Smith took charge.
