Wolves boss Kenny Jackett says the club are interested in signing former Newcastle United striker Shola Ameobi.

The 33-year-old Nigeria international, who left St James' Park in May 2014, is scheduled to appear for Wolves Under-21s at Swansea on Monday.

"He's down for a few days with us. We'll see how he does as to whether we extend that," Jackett told 91热爆 WM 95.6.

"He can offset some of the forwards we've got and offer us something with his experience, power and size."

Ameobi spent 14 years at Newcastle during which he scored 79 goals in 397 appearances, 178 of which were off the bench.

Having spent the first half of last season with Turkish side Gaziantep, he then joined Crystal Palace as a free agent on a deal until the end of the season, but made just four substitute appearances.

Wolves yet to hit promotion form

Wolves, who missed out on the Championship play-offs on goal difference in May, have won just twice in seven games this season and sit 18th.

Having hosted Championship leaders Brighton in the league on Saturday, they now face second-placed Middlesbrough on Tuesday night when they visit Teesside in the third round of the Capital One Cup.

"We're always working at it in terms of trying to take the squad forward," Jackett added. "It could give us some balance, ability to hold up the ball and presence in the 18-yard box.

Wolves lost Nouha Dicko for the rest of the season with a knee injury in August. And Jackett currently has little cover behind first-choice front pair Benik Afobe and Adam Le Fondre, other than 17-year-old Bright Enobakhare, who has not figured since scoring on his debut in the League Cup against Barnet.

Midfielder Dave Edwards is also out for several weeks with a knee injury following a tackle in the first half of Saturday's 0-0 home draw with Championship leaders Brighton.

Meanwhile, full-back Matt Doherty, 23, has signed a new three-year deal at Molineux, with the option of a further 12 months in the club's favour.
