Leon Britton has fallen down the pecking order in a competitive Swansea midfield

Leon Britton's Swansea City career should not be written off yet, says full-back Neil Taylor.

Britton, 32, has turned down interest from the United States to stay and fight for his place at Swansea.

The midfielder has played only four minutes so far this season but should start against York on Tuesday night.

"Leon's a great character and he's still only 32. And when I see him in training, he's still a good player," said Wales international Taylor.

"There is no writing off Leon in any way. In training he still does things that dazzle us and he's still capable of playing at this level.

More on Leon Britton's Swansea future

"So we're happy he's still around and he's a figure for this football club. The new boys coming in have seen how big a part of this club he is, not just on the pitch but off it as well."

In contrast, Taylor has started each of Swansea's three Premier League games this season despite the summer arrival of Franck Tabanou.

The France Under-21s international, 26, is expected to make his Swansea debut when League Two side York visit the Liberty Stadium in the second round of the League Cup on Tuesday.

Taylor says Swansea need competition for places in every position if they hope to improve on last season's eighth-place finish but feels he has done enough in the early games to retain his place.

"The position is always yours to lose, that's how I see it," said the 26-year-old.

"If you're playing and you're given that chance to play then it's your position to lose. It's as simple as that in football.

"You have to give the manager no other option but to play you. That's what I've tried to do.

"I know if I play to the best of my ability I can be a good full-back in this league and that's what I want to be.

"But mainly I want to see this football club go further than what it did last season and we all have to perform to our ultimate best for us to get there."
