Liam Noble's spectacular 35-yard lob saw 10-man Notts County reach round two of the League Cup with victory at Championship side Huddersfield Town.

Murray Wallace headed Town into the lead from a corner before Noble equalised from 20 yards.

Midfielder Noble then amazed the crowd by spotting Joe Murphy off his line and audaciously lobbing him from distance.

County had Gill Swerts sent off but held on to make the second round for the third time in six years.

Jon Stead's fourth-minute header almost opened the scoring for County against his former club, while Harry Bunn had a couple of decent efforts for Town early on.

Wallace broke the deadlock with a powerful header from Bunn's corner, but Noble's shot soon after restored parity as he latched on to Kyle Da Silva's pass after some great work down the left.

And the former Carlisle man brought fans from both sides to their feet after he picked his spot spectacularly from long range.

Swerts was dismissed with 21 minutes to go for a second yellow card after he was adjudged to have deliberately handled the ball as Bunn tried to beat him.

Huddersfield boss Chris Powell:

"We have to handle the pressure.

"This is something that we did not want to happen. We wanted a win to get our season up and running but we came up against a keeper who rolled back the years."

Notts County manager Ricardo Moniz:

"It was fantastic to win against a Championship team and we scored two great goals.

"Even so, we know we can hold the ball up and play better. We are a new team and we just need to settle down.

"I want the players to play every game like it's their last. I want total commitment."
