Jimmy Dack has pulled out of the race to be the next Newport County manager according to the club.

Dack was placed in temporary charge at Rodney Parade following former boss Justin Edinburgh's departure for Gillingham in February.

A Dack has told the board "he does not want to be considered" for the role.

Edinburgh's former assistant, Dack, will oversee Saturday's game at home to Oxford United on Saturday 2 May.

County director Howard Greenhaf said: "We have been through some fantastic times together and the club is now in a much stronger position than when Jimmy [Dack] arrived, we all wish him well for the future."

The Exiles have started to talk to potential new managers with former England captain Terry Butcher understood to be in the frame.

The former Ipswich Town and Rangers defender has been out of work since being sacked as manager of Hibs in June 2014 following their relegation from the Scottish Premier Division.

County look set for a third season in League Two after being promoted from the Conference Premier in 2013.

Their 2-0 away win over York left Newport three points outside the play-off places with one game remaining - however, their inferior goal difference means they are unlikely to overtake seventh-placed Plymouth.
