Ex-Wales midfielder Owain Tudur Jones says his former manager Terry Butcher would be a good appointment for Newport County.

Former England captain Butcher is understood to be in the frame to be the League Two side's next manager.

Jones played under Butcher at Inverness Caledonian Thistle and Hibernian and says his former boss would a good fit for Newport.

"He obviously fancies another challenge," Jones said.

"Newport is a good challenge for somebody to come in. It's a club that's relatively stable and has had a good bit of success in the last few years."

Newport are set for a third season in League Two after being promoted from the Conference Premier in 2013.

Jimmy Dack has been in caretaker charge since Justin Edinburgh left for Gillingham in February, but "does not want to be considered for the job".

County have started to talk to potential successors with Butcher along with Mansfield boss Paul Cox, ex-Cheltenham manager Mark Yates and ex-England striker James Beattie also under consideration.

Butcher, the former Ipswich Town and Rangers defender, has been out of work since being sacked as manager of Hibernian in June 2014 following their relegation from the Scottish Premier Division.

His managerial CV also includes spells with Coventry City, Sunderland, Motherwell, Brentford and Sydney FC in Australia.

"He's a motivator and he tries to bring out the best in players in that way," Jones told 91热爆 Radio Wales Sport.

"Obviously it ended on a sour note for him in Scotland.

"At Inverness we were very successful for a small team and things were brilliant.

"Then he came to Hibs and things didn't go to plan and we ended up getting relegated.

"The only problem is when you're in Scotland for the amount of years that he has been, is that you do lose a bit of touch with players down in Leagues One and Two.

"What's important, if he gets the job, is to get the right people around him who may have that experience."
