England Under-21 captain Jack Butland has signed a new contract with Stoke City in a deal that will keep him at the club until the summer of 2019.

The 22-year-old keeper has made just seven appearances for the Potters.

This week England boss Roy Hodgson said Butland was his third-choice keeper.

"He's a player that [Stoke manager] Mark Hughes holds in very high regard and Roy Hodgson's decision underlines his standing in the English game," said Stoke chief executive Tony Scholes.

"There's genuine competition for the goalkeeping spot at the club with Asmir Begovic, Jack and Thomas Sorensen and Jack has made no secret of his desire to be our number one."

Butland, who joined Stoke in a 拢3.5m deal from Birmingham City as a 19-year-old, has had loan spells at Championship clubs Barnsley, Leeds United and Derby County over the past two seasons.
