McArthur's goal on the opening day of the season for Wigan sealed a 2-2 draw against Reading

Leicester City have had an initial bid for midfielder James McArthur rejected by Wigan Athletic, but chairman Dave Whelan says he is open to considering improved offers for the player.

Whelan confirmed that the Latics have also turned down an approach for the Scotland international, 26, from another unnamed Premier League side.

"We need the right offer," Whelan told 91热爆 Radio Leicester.

"I don't want to stop the lad from going into the Premier League."

Whelan continued: "What they offered was good, but not quite to our expectations.

"We have to get enough money to get the necessary replacement.

"There is bound to be more offers from other Premier League clubs or Leicester because he is such a tough, quality player."

Leicester's approach comes after Foxes boss Nigel Pearson said talks to bring in former Inter Milan captain Esteban Cambiasso have progressed.

McArthur, who has made 155 appearances for the Latics since arriving has scored one goal and started all four of Wigan's Championship matches to date this season.

"We will be so sorry to lose him, but football being football sometimes you have to accept it," said Whelan.

Meanwhile, Wigan look set to sign Brentford midfielder Adam Forshaw after the Bees confirmed they accepted an undisclosed offer for the 22-year-old.

Forshaw, League One's Player of the Year last season, helped Brentford win promotion to the Championship earlier this year.
