Striker David Goodwillie has signed a one-year contract with Aberdeen.

The 25-year-old former Dundee United player was freed by Blackburn Rovers this summer.

Goodwillie has been capped three times by Scotland and .

Dons manager Derek McInnes said: "I'm delighted to have secured David. He's a striker who has a real capability and it's up to us as staff and him as a player to get the very best from him."

Kilmarnock and St Johnstone were also hoping to land Goodwillie but McInnes was keen to add to his options up front following the departures of Scott Vernon and Calvin Zola.

"The manager really didn't need to convince me to come to the club," Goodwillie told the official Aberdeen website.

"I know the history of Aberdeen and how big a club it is so I jumped at the opportunity.

"Tony Docherty was my reserve coach at Dundee United when I was growing up and he was always good to me and helped me progress. Derek McInnes was the captain at Dundee United when I was 16 and I always had a lot of respect for him. He was always good to the younger boys coming through the ranks.

Goodwillie, who said he had learned a lot during his time at Blackburn, added: "I'm looking to get as many games as I can, score goals and then we'll see what happens at international level but I just need to work hard and good things will come.

"I know some of the boys, I've played with a couple of them and obviously played against a lot of them.

"Hopefully I am not too far behind in terms of fitness. I've got a wee bit of catching up to do but I will work as hard as I can to get to the same level as the rest of the boys."

Goodwillie was linked with a move to Pittodrie in January before the club brought in Adam Rooney.

The striker started his career at Dundee United before making a move to Blackburn. He scored just five times for the Lancashire team, but hit six goals during a six-month loan spell back in Tayside last season.
