St Mirren: Danny Lennon thrilled with display of 10 men

  • Published

Manager Danny Lennon insists his 10-man St Mirren side produced a "monumental performance" to secure a 2-0 win over Hibernian in Paisley.

The Buddies were two goals to the good courtesy of Kenny McLean and Paul McGowan when Jim Goodwin was sent off after 28 minutes.

And they held on for the win to give their hopes of avoiding the relegation play-off a huge boost.

"It was a monumental performance and I'm delighted," said Lennon.

"The players were outstanding today in terms of the start and how they finished. They played for one another, they played for the jersey and they played for that wonderful support.

"We got off to a fantastic start after 13 seconds with a fine goal, Kenny McLean gets into the box and that's one of his key strengths.

"Then we go for another one, which was very pleasing because any time we've taken a lead this season we've let the opposition back into it.

"We manage to get another one and were looking quite comfortable and in control of the game - they haven't really caused us any problems.

"We were dominating in midfield and Jim Goodwin, for the 28 minutes he was on, was outstanding.

"The sending off shifts the tactical side, but we quickly went into the two banks of four and I was delighted with the character shown by the players, because they had to shift their mentality.

"We had a lot of creative players out there who had to do the donkey work and they did fantastically well."

Goodwin was shown a straight red card for a challenge on midfielder Kevin Thomson.

"I managed to catch one of the replays and he certainly does go to ground, but it's inconclusive whether he makes any contact," added the Saints manager.

"Jim's distraught and adamant that there was no contact, He did ask the referee what it was for and he said serous foul play, so we will agree to disagree and we'll look at it."

When asked if he might appeal against the red card, Lennon said: "Yes, he's a very important player for us and certainly on the level of performance he gave us in the 28 minutes he was on, we need him."
