A second-half penalty saw Port Vale end Walsall's five-match unbeaten run.
A lively contest saw Chris Birchall and Doug Loft go close for Vale while home goalkeeper Sam Johnson saved from Romaine Sawyers and Michael Ngoo.
Vale took the lead after Tom Pope was pulled down in the penalty area by Paul Downing, with Jennison Myrie-Williams converting the spot-kick.
Vale hung on to record a league double over Walsall for the first time since the 1899-1900 season.
