Nigel Hughes has decided to step down as chairman of Gloucester City after five years in the role.

Businessman Hughes has been instrumental in helping the Tigers overcome off-field issues which occurred after they lost their Meadow Park stadium to flooding in 2007.

He will remain as a director to oversee their most recent planning application for a new ground.

"There has never been a dull moment during my time with City," said Hughes.

"The difficulties we have faced over the years have been well documented, but despite all of the problems we have had to endure we have persevered and kept going, even achieving promotion in the face of such adversity."

Gloucester City have ground-shared with Cirencester, Forest Green Rovers and currently Cheltenham Town, with Meadow Park not fit for use since it was submerged by flood water.

Hughes and the board worked for three years to draw up plans for a new stadium but after a number of set backs in the application process they are still without a home and have been hit by financial difficulties.

However, last week Gloucester City moved a step closer to a solution after the Environment Agency approved their scaled-down plans to rebuild on Meadow Park and the club are now able to proceed with their planning application.
