Newport County manager Justin Edinburgh has dismissed the possibility of taking over at League Two rivals Portsmouth.

Portsmouth have sacked Guy Whittingham, leading ex-Pompey player Edinburgh to be linked with the vacancy.

"I'm more than happy at this football club [Newport]," said Edinburgh.

"It's a fantastic club… the grass isn't always greener on the other side so I think I've got fantastic backing by the board, a great relationship with [chairman] Tim Harris."

Former Pompey striker Whittingham, 49, had his contract terminated on Monday after a year in charge at Fratton Park.

Edinburgh, who made 34 league appearances for Portsmouth, was speaking after seeing his side draw 0-0 at league leaders Oxford United.

That meant Newport dropping two places to eighth, but they remained five points behind Oxford.

On the same night Portsmouth lost 2-1 at home to Southend United and the former lie 18th in the table.

Edinburgh, who signed a new Newport deal in October, 2013, added: "You can see my players play for me and I think we're a work in progress and I look forward to continuing that work."
