Carlisle 1-0 Sheffield Utd

Managerless Carlisle beat Sheffield United to claim their first League One win of the season.

Greg Abbot was dismissed as boss on Monday after they took just two points from their first six matches.

With assistant Graham Kavanagh in temporary charge, Matty Robson netted a second-half header to earn the Cumbrians a much needed victory.

The Blades, who have not won since the opening day of the season, spurned two chances to equalise in the second half.

Substitute Callum McFadzean's low cross from the left skidded across the six-yard box and the winger then laid on a chance for Michael Doyle, who lifted his shot high over the crossbar.

Carlisle United caretaker manager Graham Kavanagh told 91热爆 Radio Cumbria:

"The manager leaving on Monday was quite upsetting, He was incredibly dignified and gracious in the manner in which he left and the final thing he said to myself and the staff was, as a parting gesture, 'will you do the best to get us a win'.

Kavanagh praises ex-boss Abbott

"He [Greg Abbott] went and spoke to the group. He was a bit emotional and one or two felt like they had let him down.

"We got that great performance today and it's a victory that we all wanted, none more so than the players and the staff.

"I do want to take it forward, I would love to be given the opportunity.

"Today was about doing a job for the football club - asking the players if they could perform to the levels we ask them and to a man they did that.

"We got the result and we move forward and hopefully it's the start of bigger and better things."

Sheffield United manager David Weir told 91热爆 Radio Sheffield:

"It was disappointing, frustrating and we're questioning a lot of things, questioning ourselves.

"We'll try to be honest with each other as we can and try to get to the position where by we're improving but at the minute it's very, very hard.

"The message I put across to the players and how they perform is my responsibility so I don't think it's the players' fault."
