Reading boss Nigel Adkins says he hopes to add to his squad before the transfer window shuts on 2 September.

The Royals have so far brought in Royston Drenthe, Wayne Bridge and Danny Williams this summer and Adkins has hinted at further arrivals,

"We need competition, a strong squad and we are still in this transfer window," Adkins told 91热爆 Berkshire.

"I'd like to think we are going to bring some more players in to bolster the squad we've got."

Reading won their opening-day fixture against Ipswich and Adkins knows he will need a strong squad if the Royals are to return to the Premier League at the first attempt following relegation last season.

"We want to win, we want to get back in the Premier League," he said.

"No one is guaranteed a place but likewise we are not going to achieve anything with just 11 players.

"I've highlighted the fact that 28 to 30 players are going to need to contribute to handle the demands of the season. We know the demands are rigorous in the Championship. I think the players have got their heads on it. We have a common goal and that is to win."

Adkins takes the Royals to Bolton on Saturday and the former Southampton manager is expecting a stern test from Dougie Freedman's side.

"Bolton are an excellent side, they finished the season strongly and have adjusted to the new manager," he said.

"They have players who have played in the Premier League, they have been a Premier League club and expect to be back there so we know it is going to be a challenging fixture.

"They have several players who are a threat but we've got to go there with the mindset to win a game of football."
