Peterborough United boss Darren Ferguson has said it is too soon to discuss his future at the club.

Posh suffered relegation to League One with Saturday's 3-2 loss at Crystal Palace, after which Ferguson was asked whether he will remain in charge.

"I can't go on about next season. It's not the right time," 41-year-old told 91Èȱ¬ Radio Cambridgeshire.

"I'll talk about that when it's right. I'm devastated for the club. I've never worked for a better group of players."

A draw at Selhurst Park would have been enough to keep Posh up, but Palace condemned them to the drop with an 89th-minute Mile Jedinak header.

The London Road club's points total of 54 is the highest for a relegated team in the history of the second tier.

And former Wrexham and Wolves midfielder Ferguson suggested his side may have missed the opportunity to become a competitive Championship outfit next term.

"I'm really gutted that I won't get the opportunity to perhaps take this team to where they really should be going," he said.

"I really felt if we got over the line today we had a marvellous opportunity to strengthen in the summer and really have a got at it.

"I really do believe we're that good. It sounds bizarre because we've been relegated but we've not had any luck in terms of it being the highest points total ever for a team to go down.

"Someone had to suffer and unfortunately we're going to suffer for a while now."

But the Scot was quick to add that his talk of a missed opportunity did not mean he was poised to leave.

"I'm not talking that way at all. It will have an affect on the club as a whole, financially it's a huge difference," he said.

"As a group we won't get to do what I felt we could do. We'll have to look at [whether the club can challenge for promotion] financially, but that's up to the chairman.

"I'm devastated for my players and my chairman."
