Shrewsbury Town have signed young Newcastle United defender James Tavernier on an initial month's loan.

The 21-year-old right-back played on trial in Tuesday's 4-2 pre-season friendly win over Birmingham City.

And he has now become Town's second loan signing of the summer, with eight days to go before the big kick-off.

Shrewsbury have also brought in former Wales international keeper Danny Coyne as their new goalkeeping coach, a full-time replacement for Gavin Ward.

Eric Steele initially came in to help coach Shrewsbury's keepers Chris Weale and Joe Anyon following Ward's departure to Nottingham Forest at the start of July.

But the arrival of former Aston Villa and Manchester United goalkeeping coach Steele was only ever a short-term arrangement.

And Town boss Graham Turner has now appointed 39-year-old former Tranmere Rovers, Grimsby Town, Leicester City, Burnley, Middlesbrough and Sheffield United keeper Coyne.

It is Coyne's first coaching role since he effectively ending his playing days after being released by the Blades last month.

Tavernier's arrival, meanwhile, follows the return of striker Akwasi Asante on loan from Birmingham City.

Before also bringing in teenage striker John Marsden last week, Turner's three previous signings so far this summer had all been defenders - Alex McQuade, Dave Winfield and Tamika Mkandawire.

Bradford-born Tavernier has previously had loan spells at Gateshead, Sheffield Wednesday, Carlisle and MK Dons.

Only nine of his 52 career appearances so far have been for his parent club, with whom he signed a new deal last summer, tying him to St James' Park until 2015.
