Burton Albion have confirmed caretaker manager Gary Rowett as their new boss on a non-contract basis.

The former assistant boss has been in temporary charge of the League Two club since Paul Peschisolido was sacked in March following a 14-game winless run.

Rowett, 38, lost five of his 10 games in charge - including a 7-1 hammering against Bristol Rovers - but stopped the slide towards the relegation zone.

He told he had a "moral contract" with chairman Ben Robinson.

Robinson said: "I have been impressed by Gary and have every faith he will be a success."

AFC Telford manager Andy Sinton, Barnet boss Martin Allen and Mansfield Town manager Paul Cox had all been linked with the job.

But Robinson was keen to ensure some continuity at the Pirelli Stadium.

"We now look forward to a summer where I am sure the necessary changes will be made as we plan for the 2012-13 season."

Former Birmingham City, Derby County, Leicester City and Charlton Athletic midfielder Rowett played 47 games for the Brewers before retiring in 2007.
