Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson said his team's display in their 5-0 win at Wolves was "adequate".

Sunday's victory at Molineux put United four points ahead of Manchester City at the top of the Premier League, but cut City's goal-difference advantage to only three.

"The scoreline makes it look comprehensive, it wasn't really, but our finishing was good," said Ferguson.

"The number of goals could be significant by the end of the season."

Two goals by Javier Hernandez after strikes by Jonny Evans, Antonio Valencia and Danny Welbeck gave United an eighth Premier League win in nine games.

The opportunity to widen the lead over City came as Roberto Mancini's men were without a match this weekend and play their game in hand when Chelsea visit the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday.

Ferguson added: "We've got the [goal difference] deficit with Manchester City down by five to three and we hope we can catch them up in terms of the goal difference.

"It's only a point breathing space. I know it's four points but you never what's going to happen on Wednesday. It's a difficult game for both teams and Chelsea are battling to be in the top four and have maybe come back to form.

"It's important to look at ourselves. We try to win our games and hopefully it takes us [to] where we want to be."
