Carlisle United manager Greg Abbott has praised midfielder Chris Chantler after he made a first league start in Saturday's 1-1 draw against Walsall.

The 21-year-old completed a permanent move to the Cumbrians earlier this month from Manchester City following a successful loan stint.

"I think he has done ever so well," Abbott told 91热爆 Radio Cumbria.

"He looked comfortable on the ball, he has coped well with his job defensively and we know he's a tidy little player."

Abbott continued: "He is one that will progress and help and get better.

"Today he has probably shown the fans that he is well worth being at this football club, he got us out of a bit of a hole."

Sunderland striker Jordan Cook made a first appearance following his loan move, coming on as a substitute for Tom Taiwo midway through the second-half.

"He has looked really lively in training to be honest, and because of the run we are on there was no reason for him to start.

"I thought he has put a great shift in today when he has come on and nearly found us that goal with a really good piece of play.

"Hopefully he will give us that impact along with Paddy [Madden] and Craig [Curran] and the rest of them that can come off the bench, and try to find us a goal when the chips are down."
