Doncaster 2-0 Barnsley

  • Published

Goals from James Hayter and Kyle Bennett saw Doncaster move off the bottom of the Championship with a South Yorkshire derby win over Barnsley.

Hayter took advantage of good work from Billy Sharp just before the quarter-hour to break the deadlock by side-footing home past Luke Steele.

Barnsley, who beat Leeds 4-1 on Saturday, had few chances with Ricardo Vaz Te going closest.

With a minute remaining, Bennett sealed the points with a shot from 20 yards.

The win, Rovers' third consecutive home victory, was fully deserved.

Sharp, Bennett, James Coppinger and Simon Gillett all had chances for Dean Saunders's side, while the visitors, who slipped down to 16th following the defeat, forced David Button into just one real save.

The Rovers keeper, , did well to save from Scott Wiseman.

But the visitors' best opportunity had fallen to Saturday's hat-trick hero Vaz Te, the Portuguese firing wide from close range 10 minutes before the break.

The result sees Doncaster replaced at the bottom of the table by Coventry, who lost 1-0 at West Ham.

Doncaster boss Dean Saunders: "It's a great result for us and some of the players really stepped up to the plate.

"I thought all of them were brilliant and that's probably the hardest we've worked as a group since I've been here.

"The attitude and character in the team was tremendous and we scored two great goals to top it off."

"We didn't play well when we lost at Barnsley in November and the players didn't need any motivating."

Barnsley boss Keith Hill: "Sometimes you have to hand credit to the opposition.

"They pressed us from the start and did a good job on us - and when the first goal went in it was always uphill for us.

"I was really encouraged by some of our play but the final ball let us down and our decision making wasn't as sharp as it has been.

"It's been a busy period for everyone and it looked as if a bit of tiredness crept into our play."
