Calderwood will work with Chris Hughton for the third time

Birmingham City have appointed former Hibernian and Nottingham Forest boss Colin Calderwood as assistant manager to Chris Hughton.

The 46-year-old has been out of a job since being sacked by Scottish Premier League side Hibs earlier this month.

Hughton was assistant at Tottenham when Calderwood was a player and the former Northampton boss also worked under Hughton at Newcastle United.

Calderwood led Northampton to promotion in 2006 and took Forest up in 2008.

"We would have liked to bring him in before but, of course, at that stage he was contracted to Hibernian," Hughton told the club's website.

"The opportunity has now come about and that being the case, I didn't hesitate.

"He's also somebody that first-team coach knows very well and for me, that makes things even better because the three of us will work very closely together.

"He's an individual of very good experience at different levels in the game and he's coached and managed.

"He's gained great respect from the people he worked with and he'll be a wonderful addition to the staff."
