Brighton have completed a deal to sign goalkeeper Steve Harper on a one-month loan from Newcastle United before Monday's game with West Ham United.

The 36-year-old has yet to make an appearance for the Magpies this season, and will challenge Casper Ankergren and Peter Brezovan at the Amex Stadium.

"He is going to play for the next three or four years," Newcastle boss Alan Pardew said.

"It's an opportunity for Steve to show his wares."

Pardew added: "If he doesn't stay with this club [Newcastle], he'll always go to a top club."

Harper's first-team opportunities have been limited by the emergence of Netherlands international Tim Krul, who has been ever-present in the league so far this season.

In addition Pardew signed another goalkeeper in Rob Elliot from Charlton Athletic during the summer transfer window to add to the competition at St James' Park.

"Harps is very keen to play and obviously he's a top goalie," Pardew continued.

"It's an opportunity for him to play and that's what he wants to do

"For Brighton it's a real coup, he sat here behind Shay Given for so long and is unfortunate to have a top young goalkeeper like Tim come through and push him to one side."

Former Seaham Red Star keeper Harper has made 190 appearances for Newcastle, and joins winger Kazenga LuaLua in being on loan with the Seagulls from St James' Park.
