Peterborough show interest in Southend's Kane Ferdinand

MacAnthony says Ferdinand is among a list of young prospects Posh admire

Peterborough United chairman Darragh MacAnthony has said Posh have enquired about Southend's Kane Ferdinand.

But MacAnthony added the club have stopped short of tabling an offer, despite reports to the contrary.

Ferdinand, 18, broke into the Shrimpers team last term and went on to play 22 games for Paul Sturrock's side.

"He is on list of talented youngsters for future and we made a call about him," MacAnthony said on .

"[We] are planning to keep eye on him this season.

"I see on young lad... promising young player for future but we did not offer this for him."

The midfielder, who is a cousin of Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand, with Southend in March.

Sturrock said at the time: "He's got a bright future in the game and he has already established himself as an important member of our squad.

"There were other sides interested in securing him next season from higher divisions so we are glad that Kane has decided to commit himself to this football club."

He has since established himself in the Republic of Ireland Under-19 squad.
