Chelsea have handed a new one-year contract to goalkeeper Henrique Hilario.

The 35-year-old's contract was due to expire this summer, but the Portuguese will now spend a sixth season at Stamford Bridge.

Hilario, who has made 37 appearances for the club, has struggled to dislodge regular keeper Petr Cech.

Last season he played just one game - in the 3-1 defeat to Manchester United in the Community Shield at Wembley.

Hilario arrived at the club as third choice keeper in 2006 having enjoyed two spells at Porto, where he played under former Blues boss Jose Mourinho, and a stint at Nacional.

Soon after his arrival at the club, injuries to Cech and Carlo Cudicini in the same game meant Hilario's Chelsea debut came against European champions Barcelona in the Champions League, Hilario keeping a clean sheet in a 1-0 victory.

Cudicini's departure to Tottenham in January 2009 promoted the Portuguese to second choice behind Cech but the signing of Ross Turnbull from Middlesbrough later that summer intensified the competition for starts.
