Chris Froome stays in contention at Criterium du Dauphine

Criterium du Dauphine is the traditional warm-up race to the Tour de France

Britain's Chris Froome finished third on stage five of the Criterium du Dauphine to move fifth overall.

Froome, who won this race before winning the Tour de France in 2013, is 41 seconds behind leader Tejay van Garderen, who was second on Thursday.

French rider Romain Bardet won the 161km mountainous stage.

Britain's Simon Yates finished 50 seconds behind Bardet in fifth, with the Orica rider sixth overall - tow seconds behind Froome.

Thursday's route, from Digne-les-Bains to Pra-Loup, is the same as the peloton will negotiate on stage 17 of the Tour de France on 22 July.

The race, a warm-up to the Tour de France which starts on 4 July, ends on Sunday.
