Fifth one-day international, Ranchi:

India 288-7 (48.4 overs) beat Sri Lanka 286-8 (50 overs) by three wickets

Virat Kohli struck an unbeaten 139 to guide India to a three-wicket victory over Sri Lanka and seal a 5-0 one-day series whitewash.

The stand-in captain's innings helped the hosts chase down Sri Lanka's total of 286-8 with eight balls to spare.

Sri Lanka skipper Angelo Mathews also hit 139 for the tourists, while India seamer Dhawal Kulkarni collected 3-57.

India wobbled from 215-4 to 231-7 as Ajantha Mendis (4-73) picked up quick wickets before Kohli took control.

Sri Lanka elected to bat after they won the toss and Mathews, who made his maiden ODI century, helped his side post their highest total of the series as he clubbed 10 sixes in his 116-ball innings.

Ton of success for Kohli

Virat Kohli has scored 14 hundreds when India have been chasing, 13 of which have resulted in victories for his side

Lahiru Thirimanne made 52 and Tillakaratne Dilshan also chipped in with 32, while the spin of Ravichandran Ashwin and Akshar Patel saw both players pick up two wickets each.

Mathews (2-33) then removed Rohit Sharma, scorer of a world record 264 in the fourth ODI in Kolkata, and fellow opener Ajinkya Rahane for single figures.

Ambati Rayudu (59) and Kohli steadied the ship for India before spinner Mendis accounted for India middle-order trio of Robin Uthappa, Kedar Jadhav and Stuart Binny.

But Kohli kept his cool as he compiled his first hundred of the series and the 21st in his ODI career, securing victory with a six off Mendis over long-on.
