Amjad Khan took five wickets for Sussex during a tight first day in their County Championship opener at Surrey.
The hosts lost Jacques Rudolph and Chris Jordan early on but recovered to 264 thanks to an unbeaten 86 from Tom Maynard and 52 from Zander de Bruyn.
Khan claimed the last four wickets to end with bowling figures of 5-57.
Sussex struggled in their reply and ended day one on 105-5 with Chris Nash, Ed Joyce, Luke Wells, Murray Goodwin and Michael Yardy all dismissed.
Joyce was out to the first ball he faced when he was trapped lbw by Jon Lewis, while Jade Dernbach bowled both Luke Wells and Murray Goodwin.
In what turned out to be the last ball of the day, Jordan claimed the wicket of Sussex captain Yardy, who was caught by Rudolph.

"Advantage Surrey at the end of day one after a fascinating day of fluctuating fortunes at the Oval.
"Sussex will be disappointed Surrey got to 264 all out, particularly as they had reduced the hosts to 11-2 and then 126-5.
"Amjad Khan took his first five-wicket haul for Sussex, which was a due reward for his excellent line and length and the ability to make the batsman play at nearly every delivery.
"However, credit Tom Maynard as his knock of 86 not out in difficult overcast conditions was full of powerful strokes and further confirmed his undoubted quality.
"Having lost Ed Joyce for a duck, Chris Nash and Luke Wells seemed to be in control as Sussex reached 63-1 but four late wickets including skipper Michael Yardy in the final over of the day, swung the pendulum very much back in Surrey's favour.
"The first hour tomorrow morning could go a long way to determining the outcome of this game.
"Surrey will be after quick wickets and a sizeable lead, Sussex need to bat with determination to keep themselves in the game, it all makes for a mouth watering day ahead on Friday."
