I take blame for Roach split - Khan

Amir Khan says he hopes new trainer Virgil Hunter will make him a complete fighter, while conceding "he has never really had a defence" in the ring.

Khan, who fights Carlos Molina in Los Angeles on 15 December, recently split from Freddie Roach following back-to-back defeats,

"Virgil made it clear he is going to be with me 100%," said Khan.

"I'm an offensive fighter and I need my trainer to teach me about defence."

Khan said Roach's commitments to Philippine superstar Manny Pacquiao made their relationship untenable.

And while Hunter is the trainer of super-middleweight king Andre Ward, Khan insists the new arrangement is an improvement.

"We have changed a lot of stuff for this upcoming fight, first of all the trainer which I think is a massive part of the camp," said Bolton fighter Khan, the former WBA and IBF light-welterweight champion.

"Freddie is a great trainer but I wasn't getting everything I wanted.

"I spoke to Virgil and the first thing I said to him was 'you have Andre Ward, I hope you are not going to be busy like Freddie was with Manny Pacquiao and I get 100% of your time'."

Following defeats to Lamont Peterson and Danny Garcia, Khan is keen to become more than an all-out attacking boxer.

"I've still got room for improvement and it is maybe a case of going back to the basics," said the 25-year-old, who confirmed he also held talks with Floyd Mayweather Sr.

"My main style was a boxer, using my brains and stuff, and then when you start winning fights so comfortably you can forget about the meaning of being a boxer.

"What Virgil wants me to do is go back to the boxing again but be a smart boxer and understand what I have to do.

"It is about sticking to a game plan because sometimes when I see red I forget about the game plan and go all out.

"I can promise you next year we will fight for a world title and become a world champion again."
