Shropshire Writers
INSPIRATION

"Keep away from people who try to belittle your ambitions. Small people always do that, but the really great make you feel that you, too, can become great."
Mark Twain

"Writing a novel is like driving a car at night. You can see only as far as your headlights, but you can make the whole trip that way."
E.L. Doctorow

"Imagination grows by exercise, and contrary to common belief, is more powerful in the mature than in the young."
W. Somerset Maugham

"He is able who thinks he is able."
Buddha

"Outside of a dog, a book is man's best friend. Inside of a dog it's too dark to read."
Groucho Marx

"A synonym is a word you use when you can't spell the word you first thought of."
Burt Bacharach
Ruined

Market Drayton

A country house

In grounds
Acres, grand.

Land for games,
Walks, long and short.
Cavort.

Pools
To fish, swim, cool
The mind, unwind.

Hide and seek
Shade, ambushed paths
Rhododendrons, purple, red

Those weekends.
With friends
Flappers out of town.

Fun, the gun.
Good sport.
Pass the port.

Ladies withdraw

Before the War

A country house,
torn, forlorn

We mourn.

Shropshire
by
Darren Poffley
What a place
So near and yet so far
With trees and space
No sense of rat-race

Shrewsbury the old
Telford the new
Ludlow at the bottom
A fantastic castle to view

But the car is king
If you want to get around
Beautiful countryside
Too many roundabouts in town

History is everywhere
Right up to today
Old from before Christ
If you want to go that way

Industry started here
But that you surely know
You can talk about Ironbridge
Where ever you go

The M54 is one link in
To see Telford Plaza
Makes coming home
Really sink in
