Pace of Life

Local Area
If you are looking to get things done quickly, forget It!! It will not happen. Well yes it will eventually but you have to remember this is at a different pace of life, and you have made this decision to change it! The main thing you will notice is the island is quite large and sometimes you can forget that this is a remote off shore area. so if a storm is brewing keep stocked up, otherwise the ferry may not come in after 3 days and supplies will run low, hence panic buying. So we have planned to build a large larder unit in our new kitchen design for back up supplies, just in case

The other thing to take into account is that the builders have a monopoly, and prices range from 25-50% higher than on the mainland, fuel is slightly higher too food & clothes are reasonable. Ferry cost are outrageous there are no concession prices in place for locals.

On the 6 days a week Monday to Saturday you can go about your normal business, but again remember Sunday is a day of rest, so off to church you go or if you prefer spend a day out with the family.but put away your tools, drilling, knocking, strimming & washing.

You have to respect the locals and work with them, please dont think you can change thier way of life, cos you made the move to change yours.

Welcome to the island Fred Blog ... :-) There are gaelic-speaking courses starting all over the place at the moment - do you have plans to take advantage of them ...? Yes, I made the move to allegedly 'change my way of life' ... what I didn't realise is that most people carry their way of life with them, and go about it just the same wherever they are ... I moved to take it a little easier, and now find that I am just as busy as I was before ...!!

It does take a bit of doing, leaving your lifestyle behind when you move to the islands, No more rat race, hustle or bustle, traffic jams and such like. If you find your dream destination and you have succeeded in relocating you are doing well. Its nice to "meet you Fred Blog"

No need to panic buy, we're never without supplies for that long!! Get in some bread flour, yeast, a few cartons of milk and a few cupboard supplies and you'll survive, panic buying here can get a bit ridiculous sometimes and is very unfair on everyone else when theres only one load come in that day for everybody...you'll learn it's never that bad. As for builders...well...if you can get one at all then well done to you. Island time applies with all trade here, i've spoken to someone a few weeks ago who's waited many years to get an extension built. Sundays are bliss once you get used to them, how good to have one day a week where i don't have to go anywhere, do anything or see anyone. It can be a pain if you don't drive as i don't, but my legs work just as well, just not as far.... You'll get used to the slower pace eventually...you'll stop tapping your foot at the checkout when they take twice as long because they're bletherin about other people, you'll enjoy that the kids no longer HAVE to have named trainers and clothes as kids here don't realy see that as important. As you say you chose to come here and live a slower pace, relax and enjoy it, it's worth it.

Does anyone have any information with regard to working in the construction industry on the Isle of Lewis. I am a time served plumber and am looking to relocate with my wife and four young children. So far I've not found the information I've been looking for through blogs, search engines etc. So any suggestions would be of great help. Andrew.
