Aerosol sprays are a type of irritant that can cause your airways and lungs to become inflamed. This happens because the sprays penetrate the air around you, particularly if deodorant and hairspray are in close proximity to your mouth and nose.
What you can do to try and prevent allergic reactions:
• If products (air fresheners, plug-in air fresheners, etc.) trigger an allergic reaction consider requesting that these are switched to unscented or non-aerosol versions
• Avoid work area whilst they are being cleaned
• Let others know if you have an allergy and ask them to avoid using aerosols in your presence
• If exposure is likely, try taking an antihistamine beforehand and use your prescribed preventative treatment
• Ensure good ventilation such as using extractor fans or air conditioning
• Drink plenty of water, it helps remove irritants from your body
• Make sure that appropriate first aid can be given should anyone react to an aerosol. Your risk assessment should indicate whether there is a need for adrenaline / epi-pen due to a past reaction (mild or severe)
