Who should decide whether it is right to perform a hysterectomy on a severely disabled teenager?
Katie ThorpeÌýis the 15-year-old girl with cerebral palsy who hit the headlines last year whenÌýher mother, AlisonÌýasked a hospital in Essex to give her a daughter a hysterectomy.ÌýShe wantedÌýKatieÌýto avoid the "pain, discomfort and indignity" of menstruation. But the hospital has formally rejected her request, saying they would only operate if there was a medical reason for doing so.ÌýAlison has said she willÌýpursue the matter. She joins Jane along with Liz Sayce, Chief Executive of RADAR, to talk aboutÌýthe difficult decisions involved in caring for a severely disabled child.
