The House of Lords has voted to lift the ban on civil partnership ceremonies being held in churches. This is seen by some as a step towards turning lesbian and gay unions into marriages – in all, but name. As some gay people push for marriage, some heterosexual people are pushing in the opposite direction – calling for civil partnerships to be made available to them. They can look to the example of France, where such ceremonies have been legal for over a decade – albeit with less legal weight than marriage. Even so, the take up has been significant. Most of those opting for a civil union are heterosexual. So should we follow the French example? Jenni is joined by the French journalist Anne Elisabeth Moutet. She also speaks to Beth Ingram, who wants the law to be changed here, and to Jill Kirby, the Director of the Centre for Policy Studies, who is against such a move.
