elderly woman in wheelchair
How should long term care for the elderlyÌýbe funded?

Concerns about an ageing population and the poor state of social care provision have led to a fierce debate in recent weeks about how to reform and, more importantly, how to fund social care. By 2050 the number of people over 85 will have doubled and spending on long-term care will need to increase fourfold. Gordon Brown has said the problem is one of the biggest the government has to face but the Conservatives have criticised his Personal Care at 91Èȱ¬ Bill and claim that he’s deliberately refusing to reveal how the scheme will be funded. To discuss how we should provide and pay for the care and support of our rapidly growing population of older people Jenni isÌýjoinedÌýby Imelda Redmond, Chief Executive of Carers UK and by Julia Unwin, Chief ExecutiveÌýof the Joseph Rowntree Foundation.
