Programme 2. Tuesday 22 February, 15.45-16.00
It's winter and on the isle of Mull a pair of sea eagles hunt together. They attack a group of sea duck resting on Loch Don andÌýmanage toÌýcapture one of the birds.
For the scavenging eagles, the winter months are a real challenge. An adult bird follows an old, weak red deer stag as he staggers to his death. His carcass provides much needed nourishment for the sea eagle.
Winter eventually gives way to spring and a female sea eagle lays a single egg in her nest in the oak woodland on Mull.Ìý After three days she lays another, but then both eggs are stolen by a human thief; an obsessive collector.
Fortunately, as it's early in the season, there is time for the sea eagle pair to lay a second clutch. Elsewhere on the island, another female lays two eggs in a nest in a conifer forest.Ìý On the Isle of Hoy, our third pair of sea eagles, a pair of first time breeders, produce one egg.
It's mid-April before the first egg hatches andÌýthe adults are kept busy trying to find food for their young. One male sea eagle tries his luck at a salmon farm and only narrowly escapes a fatal injury.
