The Blackfoot
The Blackfoot are returning the swift fox, one their sacred animals, to their reservation.
Native Americans have a deeply spiritual connection with nature and believe that all life is sacred. Some animals become particularly important as spiritual guides and helpers. The Blackfoot revere the swift fox for its speed, adaptability and hunting success but it disappeared from their reservation several decades ago. It was hunted for its fur and because it was seen as a pest. As its habitat also declined the swift fox became locally extinct.
Now the community has started re-introducing swift foxes to their ancestral land, hoping that it will return to its ecological and cultural niche. But the people who knew all the ceremonies and dances associated with the swift fox have died. Once the animal has returned to the ecosystem, can it be re-intregrated into the Blackfoot religion and traditions?
